Eight Easy Steps to Get a Job Using Just Your Smartphone

We here at Q Link know how rough the job search can be. Especially if you lack resources like a desktop computer or a fancy car.

But you do have one thing that’ll give you an edge over your competition: this handy guide!

Pair that with a smartphone, and you’re ready to snag any job you want.

Let’s get started!

The search begins!

It’s always hard to start anything this important. We’ve all been there. But once you take that first step, hitting your goals gets a lot easier.

Though it might seem challenging, job hunting is super simple. Just go in with a plan.

Step 1: Using job search websites like a pro

As you might’ve expected, the internet will help you the most with finding a job.

With so many people job-hunting online nowadays, a whole bunch of great services exist on the web.

Try looking at sites like Indeed.com, Monster.com, or CareerBuilder.com, all of which are smartphone friendly.

These websites are designed to find you a job right away based on what you search. Do you want to work in construction? retail? food? There’s a job listing for you on any one of these sites.

It can be useful to broaden your search terms while looking around. For example, searching Retail will give you more results than something like Clothing Store Cashier.

Some sites will have listings that others don’t. Try to use as many different ones as you can. That way you get to see a ton of different job opportunities. One of them is bound to catch your eye.

Step 2: Put yourself out there!

If you’re interested in landing a job in retail or food, you can still apply online. But it’s also a good idea to ask in person if a location is hiring. Usually, you want to ask the manager directly if you can.

That way, even if you still end up applying online, the manager got to see you face to face. This could improve your chances of getting that job if only a little bit.

Plan out a day to go to the mall and walk into stores to ask about jobs. You can get a feel for who’s hiring AND you get a day at the mall out of it.

Step 3: Keeping an eye out for opportunity

While you surf the web or mall crawl for jobs, you should also keep your ear to the ground.

Ask around your community for job opportunities. See if anyone you know can point you in the right direction.

Who knows? One of your friends might know of a place that’s hiring. It never hurts to ask.

You can also email employers with your resume instead of just looking at listing sites. This does require a bit more effort, but its a great chance to prove your enthusiasm and set yourself apart.

Speaking of your resume.

Step 4: Crafting a winning resume

Ahh, the resume. The piece of paper that decides whether or not you get hired.

It’s important! It’s professional! It’s… really not as complicated as you think!

Making it look nice

Your resume’s presentation is important but super easy to get done right.

Resume.com has templates available to get you started. There are also a whole bunch of apps that can help you create your resume, all available in your app store simply by searching Resume.

If you’re the type that likes to do things from scratch, the Microsoft Word App is for you. It’s all the benefits of using Word without needing a personal computer.

Overall, you want your resume to be easy to skim. Companies get tons of resumes every day, so yours needs to stand out instantly. Having good structure is key.

These online resources are super important. They let you format your resume from just your smartphone. Who needs a desktop?

Now that you know how to format your resume, now you just need to write it.

Writing that resume

A resume is just a summary of your skills and experiences. More specifically, it is a summary of skills and experiences relevant to the job you are applying for.

Before jumping right into the resume itself, collect your thoughts. Make a list of what you consider to be your greatest strengths.

What are you good at? What are some past jobs that you’d like to highlight? What are your hobbies? Any of these could be useful to slap onto your resume.

Once you have a nice long list, it’s easy to pick and choose from it as you sculpt your resume.

When applying for jobs, closely read every job description. Tailor the resume you send by only using the information you think will be useful to the employer. If you’re applying to be a customer service rep, your experience as a fry cook won’t really matter to the employer, no matter how great you were at flipping those patties.

Good resumes take practice, and great resumes take even more. Just keep at it, and you’ll eventually become the Master of Applications.

Step 5: The good ol’ cover letter

Think of a cover letter as sort of a Resume Interpreter. It gives more detail about the skills and experiences in your resume.

A cover letter should be short and to the point. Employers already don’t spend much time reading resumes, so even fewer will read a cover letter.

In fact, studies have shown that only around 18% of interviewers care about cover letters. This is even if the application asks for one.

So, what should you do if an online application DOES ask for a cover letter?

Well, you could fill the cover letter section with something different. Put a letter of recommendation from a past employer, or even a portfolio of your work if you have one.

Odds are that no matter how good your cover letter is, your resume will be more important. Focus on making your resume as perfect as possible.

Step 6: Prepping for an interview!

So, you’ve landed yourself an interview.

Congratulations!

But now comes the second trickiest part of this entire process: Interview prep.

Get the basics down

First things first, get a nice-looking folder. This will hold extra resume copies. Sometimes an interviewer will ask for your resume even if they already have it. This is a chance to prove how prepared you are.

Next, put together a professional outfit. You don’t need anything too fancy, but it’s smart to look as nice as possible. Remember, it’s about a strong first impression! This makes a T-shirt and jeans a bad idea.

You’ll also want a reliable way to get to and from the interview. It’s hard to ace an interview that you don’t show up to! Also, make sure your ride will get to the interview location on time. Being early is fine but being late can cost you the job if the interviewer is strict enough. Be careful.

Lastly, have important phone numbers saved in your phone. It’s good to have someone relevant to call if an issue pops up, or if you’re running late.

Do your homework!

Spend some time researching the company you applied to.

What does the company do? Who are their competitors? (Also good to know if you don’t get the job!) What do they do differently?

Knowing a lot about the company makes interviews easier. You can answer better questions and display preparedness.

You can also get a better idea of what you’d be doing on the job. It’s always better to have more information than less.

Preparing for questions

Want to know the secret to interview questions? Prepare ahead of time.

Many interviewers ask the same questions. They’re trying to learn more about you as a person.

Here’s a list of some common interview questions:

  • Where do you see yourself in a couple years?
  • What are your greatest strengths?
  • What are your greatest weaknesses?
  • Why did you leave your last job?
  • What makes you a good fit for this position?
  • How do you handle challenges?
  • Do you have any questions for me?

Don’t be nervous! Just prepare some answers to these questions. That way you won’t be caught off guard during the interview.

Also, many people get thrown off when asked about their weaknesses. Don’t panic! Instead, take this question as a chance to show off your strengths. Talk about a time you overcame a weakness or challenge.

You’ll for sure be asked questions other than just those. But if you pay attention and answer honestly, you’ll do just fine.

Step 7: The interview

This is it. The big day.

Get a good night’s rest, eat a full breakfast, and take deep breaths. You got this!

Try to leave for the interview early. That way, if there’s a delay, you’ll still get there on time.

Shake the interviewer’s hand firmly and introduce yourself.

After that, it’s all down to you!

Some quick interview tips:

Speak clearly and with confidence. You’re there for a reason. Prove to the interviewer that you deserve the job the most.

At the end of the interview, you’ll usually be asked if you have any questions.

Try to come up with questions during the interview that prove you paid attention. This is a great opportunity to show that you care about getting the job.

If you can’t come up with anything, have some fallback questions prepared.

Ask things like what is a usual day like at this job? or what do you feel is the most important thing to know about this job?

Give the interviewer a chance to give you advice. People want to feel like their opinion matters. Give them a chance to share their knowledge.

After the interview, send an email thanking the interviewer. End the day on a friendly note.

Step 8: Keep it going!

Congrats! You did it!

At this point, you might want to relax for a bit. But I recommend sending out even more applications.

Either you got that job, or you didn’t. Applying to even more places never hurts.

If you’re having trouble finding good jobs, try changing your searches. Maybe look for jobs you didn’t think of at first.

Finding a job is about not giving up. It takes work and a bit of luck, but anyone can do it. You just need to follow the right steps.
